Vassar College is seeking a Sergeant to join their Campus Safety team in Poughkeepsie, NY. The role involves directing day-to-day operations on assigned shifts and ensuring compliance with department policies.
About the Role
As a Sergeant/Supervisor, you will be responsible for supervising officers, conducting shift briefings, managing time/leave, coordinating emergency responses, and training officers. You will also monitor job performance, prepare reports, and assist with campus event security. The position requires effective communication and decision-making skills, as well as the ability to handle emergencies and diffuse volatile situations.
About You
Required:
- Must possess and maintain a New York State Driver License.
- Must possess a valid NYS Security Guard license or a valid 8-hour pre-assignment training certificate with the ability to attain license within 30 days.
- Ability to communicate effectively in English, written and verbal.
- Ability to react calmly and effectively in emergency situations and to de-escalate charged situations.
- Ability to lift 50 lbs. or more and move 75 lbs. or more.
- Ability to stand and walk for long periods of time.
- Ability to work overtime as needed/mandated.
- Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions.
- Working knowledge of the NYS Penal Law and general familiarity with relevant federal and state laws.
- Experience with community relations.
- Experience overseeing and conducting employee training and field training.
- Ability to perform CPR/AED and CPR/AED certification required or attainable.
Preferred:
- 30 college credits or formal supervisory training at a recognized agency or institution.
- Associates degree or higher.
Benefits
- Starting hourly wage range of $27.07-$29.00 per hour, with a $1.00 per hour shift differential for shifts worked 11pm-7am.
- Employment contingent upon successful completion of a one-year probationary period and satisfactory results of a criminal background check.
